WWDC 2026: What Apple's announcements mean for Skyfire Works
Apple's WWDC 2026 keynote was, quietly, the best day Skyfire Works has had in years. Four separate announcements directly accelerate our roadmap — and none of them required us to write a single line of integration code beforehand.
GPTK 4: The emulation story just got better
Game Porting Toolkit 4 ships with a rewritten DirectX 12 translation layer and substantially better shader pre-compilation. In our early testing on the M4 Mac mini, Elden Ring went from mid-50s framerates to a locked 60 at 1440p with settings on High. The stutter on first-run shader compilation — the biggest remaining complaint from Velocity users — is measurably reduced.
Velocity will adopt GPTK 4 as the default backend for Windows titles as soon as it lands in the GM seed. No user action required; existing library entries will get the upgrade automatically.
Metal 4 Frame Interpolation
Metal 4 introduces a frame-generation API similar to DLSS Frame Generation — the GPU inserts synthesized frames between rendered ones, effectively doubling perceived framerate at modest quality cost. For Velocity, this means 30 fps GPTK titles can feel like 60. We're evaluating whether to expose this as a per-title toggle or enable it globally by default. Our current lean: opt-in per title, with a "recommended" badge on titles we've validated.
Foundation Models: on-device AI that actually runs
The new Foundation Models framework lets apps call a 3B-parameter model running entirely on-chip — no network, no API key, no latency. For Forge, this unlocks natural-language G-code review ("does this program have any rapids through material?") without shipping PII to the cloud. We have a prototype running. It's fast enough to be useful.
App Intents: Siri integration for free
App Intents in macOS Tahoe makes it trivial to expose app actions to Siri and Spotlight. We're adding intents to Velocity ("open my Street Fighter 2 library"), Forge ("show today's machine utilization"), and FamilyCloud ("start a family movie night"). These will ship in the next minor update after Tahoe GM.
Overall: Apple gave us a strong foundation for the next 18 months. The platform is moving in exactly the direction we need it to.
